It sounds like WordPad isn't opening the file as plain text. It must be noticing the tags and entities, and doing some processing on them as it opens the file.

I've never used WordPad, so I don't know if there's some way to say "I really want to open this as plain text; please don't try to be helpful." Are there any options in the Open dialog? Is there an "Open As" command? Is there a preference you can change?

Does anyone else know the answer to this?
