Subject: Two Letter Word Dictionary - entry for "uc"
Greetings from New Zealand!
For over ten years I have been compiling information for a Dictionary of Two Letter Words,which will contain entries for every combination from "aa" to "zz".I already have some Old English words on file,for example "uf",an owl.However I don't have a satisfactory entry for "uc",and am wondering if this word was ever used in Old English,perhaps as a scribal variant of "ac" (but,or oak)?
I have searched on your excellent website and found three hits for "uc" in the texts,one of which looks promising:
"-Ne maeg uc ana eowre geinatig acuman". (Bosworth/Toller,page 0414,entry 23)
(Sorry,I can't do the ae diphthong or the accent.)
This appears (I think) under the entry for "ge-mana,an",in sense 2,"an assembly for legal or other business."
Can anyone answer these questions for me please?
1. Is "uc" a legitimate Old English term in this quotation?
2. If so,what does it mean? (Is it a variant of something?)
3. Can you please translate the quotation?
4. Can you please supply the source for the quote?
